Susquehanna Gateway Heritage Area - SITE
P. Joseph Raab County Park
This 73-acre park established in 1993 is a haven for wildlife like birds and small animals. But it wasn’t always that way.
Between 1854 through 1888, the York Iron Co. Mine produced "Codorus Ore” – some of the best iron ore in the area – at the site. It was part of an 1800's iron ore boom. When operations ceased in 1888, the land was farmed and some of it was used as landfill.
Today, Mother Nature has reclaimed the site. The former iron ore mines are the best preserved in York County. Mine shafts are home to four species of bats that hibernate there during the winter months. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, there are two public walks a year (usually in March and July) and an archeology camp for kids ages 9-12. The park is closed to visitors unless a special event is occurring.
