Susquehanna Gateway Heritage Area - SITE

Rivertownes PA USA
In addition to being the bridge that links Lancaster and York counties, the Susquehanna River contributed to the development of three significant towns in the Lancaster York Heritage. Lancaster County’s Columbia and Marietta and York County’s Wrightsville each owes their history to the river.

Columbia occupies the site of the Shawanah Indian Town. The first white men arrived in 1726 and by 1730 John Wright procured a patent, built a ferry house and built a ferry-crossing business that helped launch pioneers westward. Later, the town was among finalists considered in the search for a location for our nation’s capital.

Marietta was a lumber and anthracite-iron processing center during the 19th century thanks to the railroad and the river’s canals which helped transport goods to market.

Wrightsville, named for John Wright, who settled Columbia, was the gateway for settlers traveling west.

Rivertownes PA hosts the annual RiverFest.
