Upper Hopewell Nature Preserve
Named for an iron forge that operated in the area between 1742 and 1803, Upper Hopewell Forge Wildlife Sanctuary is a birdwatcher’s retreat. Route 322, Dead End and Pumping Station roads border the tiny 8-acre, triangular tract in Elizabeth Township, northern Lancaster County. Hammer Creek flows through it before joining with the Cocalico Creek, a tributary of the Conestoga and, ultimately, the Susquehanna rivers.
The preserve features boggy bottomland, which is why it is suited to bird watching. Plus, as an added treat, the rare spreading globeflower, a buttercup variety, grows there.
There are no established trails in the sanctuary and, after the advent of summer, a thicket of wild grape, multi-flora rose, spicebush and poison ivy make it difficult to traverse the site, unless you walk in the stream.
