Windolph Landing Nature Preserve
Windolph Landing Nature Preserve in Pequea Township, Lancaser County, is unusual because it is accessible only by boat from the Conestoga River. You’ve really got to want to visit Windolph because its 10-foot riverbanks are covered by poison ivy and feature a 65-degree slope that only diehard hikers should attempt.
If you are stouthearted enough to make it to the 7.5-acre preserve, the reward in springtime is a hillside covered with Virginia bluebells.
The woodland also features hackberry, or sugarberry, trees, a favorite food source of birds and small animals. A large and distinctive chinquapin oak also calls Windolph home. Pawpaws, sugar maple and box elder trees also grow there. The river’s edge features burn ayzel, garlic mustard, violets and multi-flora roses.
Fishing is permitted in season.
