Northern York County Historical & Preservation Society
Historic Maple Shade Barn is a Pennsylvania German bank barn built in the early 1900's to replace an earlier structure that had burned. The Northern York County Historical & Preservation Society preserved it as the last remaining barn in Dillsburg, an early rural agricultural center. Today, it serves as the historical society’s headquarters.

Dill's Tavern, located at 227 North Baltimore Street in Dillsburg, is a project that the society has undertaken to restore the building to its period condition and use it for educational and community programs. Around 1742, Mathew Dill arrived from Monaghan, Ireland and acquired 504 acres near a spring. Around 1750, his son, James built a simple square 2-story stone structure, though it was grand for its time and place. A tavern portion of Dill's structure dates to about 1794. Around 1800 the Eichelbergers expanded the stone structure and continued to operate the tavern, farm operations and other businesses. Eventually, the tavern evolved into a general store. The Northern York County Historical & Preservation Society acquired the structure and property in the 2002.

Established in 1984, the historical society collects information on northern York County, which includes the boroughs of Dillsburg, Franklintown and Wellsville and the townships of Warrington, Washington, Monaghan, Carroll and Franklin.
