Lancaster Central Market at Penn Square
Established in 1730 and chartered as a royal market of King George II, Lancaster Central Market is the oldest publicly owned, continuously operated farmers' market in the country.
Known to Lancastrians simply as "Market", its characteristic Romanesque Revival-style towers peer out from amongst the buildings on Penn Square in the heart of Lancaster City.
The real experience of a farmers' market awaits inside where you'll find an array of the bounty that Lancaster County is known to produce. From locally grown fruits and vegetables to meats, cheeses, baked goods (like Lancaster County whoopie pies), fish and even flowers and crafts; all businesses are locally owned and operated by standholders that go back as many as five generations. You'll be sure to find something you like at Market. The current Market building was designed by Philadelphia architect James Warner and built in 1889. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
