Ephrata Cloister
One of America’s earliest religious communities is housed in a unique collection of Germanic buildings. Its inhabitants consisted of three orders: celibate Brothers and Sisters, and a married order of Householders. They focused on a lifestyle which emphasized spiritual, rather than material goals.
Founded in 1732, this community was led by Conrad Beissel who built its membership to over 300 by 1750. The celibates were housed within the cloister and lived a life of contemplation and self-denial. Some work was done each day: farming, fruit growing, basket making, papermaking, printing, milling and carpentry. Frakturschriften was exercised with great skill and refinement.
Tours are given every day by knowledgeable guides. The interpreter leads visitors through the 27-acre National Historic Landmark. You will see original collections and buildings set in a beautifully manicured landscape. Most visitors feel peacefulness when they are at the Cloister for a short while. An orientation exhibit and video prepare each visitor for their relaxing journey back through time. The Museum Store offers a large selection of merchandise by local craftsmen.
Our calendar of events is full through all four seasons. Charter Day in March; Special educational programs in spring and fall; Apple Dumpling Day in October and holiday programs in December.
Administered by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission with the generous support of the Ephrata Cloister Associates, a non-profit member organization.
