James Buchanan's Wheatland
America’s 15th president (1857-1861) James Buchanan was born in a log house at Stony Batter in Cove Gap, Pa. But he made his home in Lancaster at an 1828 federal-style brick mansion. Dubbed Wheatland, for the wheat fields that once surrounded it, Buchanan bought the house before his term in office and returned to spend his last years there. Known as the only bachelor president, Buchanan had great affection for Wheatland and praised "the comforts and tranquility of home as contrasted with the troubles, perplexities, and difficulties" of his public life. The rooms are elegantly decorated in Victorian. The property also features a carriage house, and various outbuildings. In December, special candlelight tours are given of the home.
