Brunner Island Spring Bird Walk

Summer resident birds are returning and this is a great time to get out and see them. We’ll explore the woods and wetlands for birds at an easy pace. Dress for the weather. Bring binoculars and field guide if you have them.
Saturday April 21, 9:30-11:30am, Meet at Wood DUck Pavilion at Brunner Island Wetlands. The wetlands entrance is directly across from Gate A on Wago Road. Follow the stone road until you see the sign for Wood Duck Pavilion. The GPS coordinates at the pavilion are N 40 05.755 W 076 42.287.

Rivertownes PA USA Iron Furnace Walking Tour

Dr.June Evans,retired Millersville University archeology professor, will lead a three-hour walking tour of the iron furnace remains between Columbia and Marietta on Sunday, April 1, beginning at 1:00PM. Registration is required since space is limited. Although the terrain is fairly level, sturdy walking shoes are recommended. The $5.00 registration fee includes a bottle of water, a snack and a booklet about the history of the iron furnaces. For more information or to register, call Claire at 684-2489.

Historic Wrightsville is holding its 37th annual Olde Towne Night where Jan Klinedinst, local Archaeologist, will speak on the early history of the area, particularly along the Susquehanna River.

The York County Department of Parks and Recreation is sponsoring a “History and Mystery of Raab County Park” hike from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 31, 2012.
Participants will tour the 19th-century York Iron Company Mine. Along the tour, discover how miners extracted the rich iron ore out of the ground and transported the ore to area furnaces. Learn about the miner’s life during the 1800s. Also, see how the York County Parks has installed bat doors over the shafts to protect the bat population.

Join the Washington Boro Society for Susquehanna River History for a lecture on Monday, March 19 at 7pm focused on the devistating flood of 1904 and the damage to Bainbridge, Marietta, Columbia, Washington Boro, and Safe Harbor. The lecture will be at the Washinton Boro Civic Center on Market Street, next to the firehouse.

Join Shank's Mare and Civil War historian Scott Mingus, Sr. on a guided hike through the borough of Wrightsville. We will re-trace the movements of the Confederate troops as they approach the borough along with the placements of the Union soldiers as they guard the strategic bridge over the Susquehanna River. This hike will give you first hand glimpses on the activities just prior to the burning of the WrightsvilleBridge and the Battle of Gettysburg.

Get an early jump on the boating season by taking a safe boating course. The Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission boating safety class gives boaters practical information so they can make more informed decisions on the water. Topics include boat terminology, legal requirements, water activities, and safety and rescue. Boater Safety Education Certificates are required for all operators of Personal Watercrafts and for boat operators born after 1/1/82 that operate motors 25 + horsepower.

Shank's Mare Outfitters - Our four-legged friends are welcome on this approximately 6.5 mile Mason-Dixon Trail hike. This is great terrain for the dogs, and full of beautiful scenery for hikers. Please have your dogs on a leash. Following the hike, we’ll not only have a hot lunch for the hikers, but we will have treats for the dogs as well.

The York County Heritage Trust will be celebrating Articles of Confederation Day on Saturday from 10am-4pm at the Colonial Court House. Stop by to learn about these important documents which were adopted while the Contiental Congress was seated in York in 1777. The day includes tours, performances, and demonstrations.

To promote discussions on this important topic, the Lancaster County Coalition for Smart Growth is sponsoring a Land Use Forum for municipal leaders, planning commission members, design professionals, elected officials and the public on Thursday, November 17, 2011 from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm at the Lancaster Farm and Home Center.
