CANCELED: Susquehanna Earth, Water, and Sky – Zimmerman Center Heritage Lecture Series

April 8 at 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm

The Zimmerman Center kicks off its “Susquehanna Earth, Water, and Sky” lecture series Wednesday, February 12, when York County Astronomical Society founding member Gregory Markowski presents “When the Stars Spoke”. This talk explores what our area’s ancient American Indian peoples would have seen in the sky and the effect it had in their lives. Cycles such as the Sun’s rising and setting, the phases of the Moon and the observations of certain stars rising or passing overhead are just a few of the things that these people observed, remembered, and planned for. These celestial events continue today, but there are so many diversions and obstacles to seeing them we need to use printed calendars, public announcements, and essentially somebody else, to remind us when something is happening. Markowski revisits that ancient knowledge, forgotten and obscured by today’s technological society.

The series continues Wednesday, March 11, when York County geologist Jeri Jones visits the Center to take a look at “earthly” features on one of our area’s most popular hiking and biking trails in his presentation “Cool Geology on the Northwest Trail”, and on April 8 retired PPL land manger and local history buff Mark Arbogast will show how the river’s waters were transformed by “Damming the River at Safe Harbor”.

Tickets for each lecture are $10 and can be purchased online.
Advanced registration required! Doors open at 6:00 PM.
