CANCELED: Susquehanna Rivertowns Walk Weekend
April 24 - April 26
Explore the river towns of Columbia, Marietta, & Wrightsville through this weekend walking event. The American Volkssport Association has developed 5k and 10k walks for each river town to explore the cultural and heritage of our river region. Everyone is welcome to participate. AVA members will receive special stamps to commemorate these walks. Pick up your guide at the Columbia Crossing River Trails Center between 8 am and 1 pm any day of the event. Return when you are finished to receive your stamp.
The Columbia walk will also start at the center, with one 5k loop featuring the Civil War and Underground Railroad history of Columbia. Some of the historic sites you will pass include Wright’s Ferry Mansion, Mt. Bethel Cemetery, Turkey Hill Experience, and Zion Hill Cemetery – the burial site of many black soldiers who fought in the Civil War.
The Marietta walk will feature the Northwest River Trail and the Marietta Borough. You can either drive 2.6 miles from the center to a trailhead parking lot in Marietta or you can continue from the 5k Columbia Rail Trail loop. The two walks connect on the River Trail. As you walk through Marietta Borough you will pass many beautiful old homes and many historic places and restaurants. The 10k has one slight hill and the 5k walk is a level walk.
The bicycling guide leaves the Columbia Crossing and travels along the River Trail thru a tunnel and along the Front Street of Marietta, unless the whole path is completed, and then gets back on the trail at the Decatur Street Access at the northern end of Marietta and continues to the Bainbridge River Access at Koser Park.
This event is free and open to the public. AVA members will need to pay $3 per walk stamp.
